About

The Subterranean Institute is a nonprofit organization created exclusively for scientific and educational purposes. Specifically the Subterranean Institute studies and explores subterranean ecosystems with the goal of protecting the biodiversity of these unique environments.

Why we do cave science

- 97% of the world’s liquid fresh water lies underground.

- Cave animals are indicators of water quality.

- Cave-adapted animals are some of the rarest animals on earth and as such these organisms are important to science and medical research.

Subterranean Institute goals

- To discover and protect the diversity of life underground.

- To investigate and document ecosystem processes of subterranean habitats.

- To preserve cave and groundwater resources for future generations.

- Promote lower-impact methods of recreational caving.
